Preparation for herniated disc and spine surgeries

Before performing herniated disc and spine surgeries as a result of back and spine disorders, some issues need to be taken into consideration for a smooth surgery and recovery period.

Here are the important issues to consider before herniated disc and spine surgeries:

  • Stop taking medications such as Aspirin or blood thinners if you are using them for at least 5 days before surgery.
  • If you are using psychiatric medication, inform your doctor.
  • You should stop eating and drinking at least 6 hours before the surgery. Do not smoke or drink alcohol.
  • Wash and shave the day before the surgery.
  • Bring comfortable pajamas and slippers to the hospital. If you have a neck collar or waist corset that was previously given, bring it with you.
  • Bring your normal x-ray, tomography, MRI, EMG, blood tests, if any, and official documents with you.
  • When you come to the hospital and are admitted, give all your documents and tests to your nurse.
  • Do not bring your personal belongings such as jewelery when coming to the hospital.
  • If you have dentures or dentures, let me know.
  • Read and sign the consent documents regarding the surgery that will be given to you.
  • If you have any questions about the surgery, ask your doctor.
